Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is such a uniquely American cultural holiday.  While this Thanksgiving may look differently from those we’ve experienced before, the sentiment will be the same.  It is an expression of gratitude.

When I was growing up, my mother and a friend of hers alternated annually hosting Thanksgiving meals at each of their homes.  Of the 20-40 people who attended the festivities annually, only one of them was American born – and he married into this extended family.  All the adults were from far flung countries, mostly Central and South America.  ALL were grateful for the immigrant experience the US had provided to them and their families – education for their children, working class to middle class security for themselves, and the opportunity to create a future….

I continue to be grateful, every day, for those experiences in my youth, and that I get to do what I love to do, particularly through this pandemic.

Gratitude is a mental state, not a trait.  No one is born with it – it is something that is taught (or not).  The practice of gratitude has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and improve overall health and well-being.  Interested in practicing it on a weekly basis rather than just around Thanksgiving?  Here are 52 quotes on gratitude you can contemplate (one per week) to see how the practice of gratitude improves your life.
